Galveston engagement session at the Grand Galvez Hotel

Couples, Engagement Sessions, Pro Tips

If you’re dreaming of an engagement session that feels timeless, romantic, and just a little cinematic, let me introduce you to one of my favorite places along the Texas coast: the Grand Galvez Hotel in Galveston.

As a Houston wedding photographer, I’m always looking for locations that offer variety without feeling overdone. The Grand Galvez checks every box. From elegant architecture and palm-lined walkways to sweeping Gulf views and golden sunsets, it’s the kind of place that makes your engagement photos feel effortless.

Why I Love Photographing Engagement Sessions at the Grand Galvez

One of the biggest reasons I recommend the Grand Galvez is how much variety we can capture without ever leaving the property.

We can start with the historic white & pink façade and grand entrance for classic, editorial-inspired portraits before wandering the gardens, balconies, and surrounding sidewalks. Just across the street, the beach gives us a completely different feel—windswept, playful, and full of movement. It’s like getting multiple engagement sessions all in one location.

Whether you’re dressed up in formal attire or keeping things casual with jeans and bare feet in the sand, the Grand Galvez works beautifully for both.

A Perfect Mix of Elegance and Fun

My favorite engagement sessions never feel stiff or overly posed.

Instead of asking you to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera, we’ll spend the evening walking together, talking, laughing, and letting moments naturally unfold. I’ll guide you when you need it, but I’ll also leave room for the little in-between moments that end up becoming your favorite photographs.

The Grand Galvez naturally encourages that balance. One moment we’re creating classic portraits against historic architecture, and the next we’re running through the surf, watching the waves roll in, or catching the last bit of sunlight reflecting off the water.

Those are the moments that feel like you.

The Best Time of Day for Photos

Like most outdoor sessions, I always recommend scheduling your engagement session about 90 minutes before sunset.

The evening light along the Galveston seawall is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. As the sun gets lower, the hotel begins to glow while the beach takes on beautiful pastel colors that photograph so well.

If we get lucky with one of Galveston’s dramatic sunsets, it’s the perfect way to end the session. However, I do like to note that since Galveston faces East, the sun does not set over the water.

What to Wear

The Grand Galvez photographs beautifully with soft neutrals, earth tones, creams, linen, and classic black.

Many couples choose two outfits:

  • One dressier look that complements the elegance of the hotel.
  • One relaxed outfit that’s perfect for walking along the beach.

Flowy dresses photograph especially well because they catch the coastal breeze and add movement to your images.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating photos that you’ll still love decades from now.

Why Galveston Makes Such a Great Engagement Session Destination

Even if you’re planning your wedding somewhere else in Texas, Galveston offers a unique backdrop that’s hard to find anywhere else.

It has history, architecture, beaches, colorful skies, and a slower pace that helps couples relax. Making a date night out of your engagement session is easy—grab dinner afterward, walk along the seawall, or spend the weekend exploring everything the island has to offer.

Your engagement session should feel like an experience, not just another item to check off your wedding planning list.

Looking for a Houston Wedding Photographer?

If you’re searching for a Houston wedding photographer who loves documenting genuine connection with a little direction (instead of endless posing), I’d love to help you plan an engagement session that feels natural, relaxed, and true to your relationship.

Whether it’s the Grand Galvez in Galveston, downtown Houston, or somewhere that’s meaningful to the two of you, we’ll create photographs that tell your story honestly—the laughter, the quiet moments, the movement, and everything in between.

Because years from now, I don’t want you to remember the poses.

I want you to remember exactly how it felt.
